Last night I was playing a great 4v4 versus game with 7 friends.  I really do love Left 4 Dead, but MAN, can we stop with the noobification?  They keep "balancing" the game with updates, but what it comes down to is they are trying to level the ground for unskilled players, which means that my skill counts for less in the game.  Don't believe me?  Here are some of the updates I'm talking about:

  • Easier to pounce a Survivor who is meleeing
  • Survivors cannot bash someone off the tongue until the Survivor being pulled is paralyzed or hanging
  • Increased Minimum damage a Hunter pounce does
  • Normalized special infected melee damage
  • Increased the cone in which a Smoker can grab a target
  • Reduced the damage that burning Hunters do to pounced victims
  • Reduced auto shotgun damage against Tanks
  • Introduced fatigue to the melee attack in versus mode. You will see a HUD display when your melee swing is cooling down

Not all of these are bad in their entirety, but in general, the kind of "balancing" that is happening isn't "survivor versus special infected" balancing, it's "noob versus seasoned gamer" balancing, meaning your hard earned FPS skills are no longer paying off.  Let's visit the above mentioned updates 1 at a time:

Easier to pounce a Survivor who is meleeing

What this ACTUALLY means is that when you play as a survivor, and you see a noob hunter pouncing you from head on, your melee counts for nothing.  He gets to pounce you anyway, even when your melee swing is perfect.  As far as I know, this change was implemented because during events, survivors tend to all group in a closet or a corner, and

Hunter Games 1.0.2 is released! PDF Print E-mail

For better or worse, 1.0.2 is ready!  Snag it in the downloads section, or use the direct link.

To upgrade an existing HG installation, just copy the whole contents of the addons and cfg folders in the download, and tell it to overwrite any existing files.  It won't overwrite any non-HG files, I promise. 

Notable changes:

    * User chat command "!kill" now has negative consequences when used in tag, reverse-tag, and infection modes.
    * Scratching survivors in 25 Damage Pounce Session or Hot Lava will now kill you.
    * When a map change is scheduled, a winner is now determined, and displayed to users.
    * Countdown is now displayed when changing map
    * Pounce Race now shows a menu as the race is going, indicating who pounced 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th
    * Added HOT LAVA game mode
    * Hunters no longer get stuck on survivors (though the bug still exists, and the hunter won't get points if he pounces a survivor just getting up)
    * Added BH1, BH3, and BH5 as new maps (they have spawn points now)
    * Hunters can now "tag" each other in mid-air by pressing primary fire and secondary fire at the same time.
        - Restricted to 1 attempt per "flight".  To reset, jump off another wall, or land on the ground.
        - No tagbacks in air.  If you get tagged, you lose your "1 chance" to tag, until you walljump or land.
        - You'll hear a "whoosh" sound for a miss, or a scratch sound if you hit.
    * Other various bugs, fixes, and features that I don't recall right now.

Hunter Games v1.0.2 Delays PDF Print E-mail

Sadly, I was not able to release the 1.0.2 update to the Hunter Games mod yesterday, as I had planned to.  I whipped up a new server instance on our physical server, and quickly had it populated with 8 players, running the new plugin.  There are currently two definite show stoppers.

1. In the new HOT LAVA mode, there is a strange spawning bug that I cannot reproduce on my local server at home. People are respawning to ghost mode very soon after dying, but it's supposed to take 99 seconds (because if you make it to the survivors or burn up, you shouldn't be able to respawn at all.  You have to wait for the next race).

2. The new "hit in mid-air" feature is causing users to lag.  I'll skip the specifics to keep this post short and readable.  The short explanation is that waaaay too many weapon_fire events fire, and the number of calculations being done is off the charts.

I know what I plan to do to solve it, but it will require users to bind a key to "hg_air_attack".  This will be the key you hit when you want to try to tag someone in the air.  Primary and Secondary Fire buttons will not work for air-attacks any longer.

I am hopeful that I can get these sorted out this week.  Stay tuned for more updates.  Sorry for the delays.

New Mini-Game Mode Coming! "Wall Jumper / HOT LAVA"! PDF Print E-mail

A new mini-game mode "Wall Jump / HOT LAVA" will be released this weekend with v1.0.2!  That means that the release is postponed until the weekend though, instead of the middle of this week.

Wall Jumper / HOT LAVA will CHANGE YOUR LIFE!  It's very similar to Pounce Race. 

  • Screens go dark for all 8 hunters, and the are frozen in place
  • 4 NPC survivor bots are spawned then teleported (all to the SAME spot, instead of spread out like in Pounce Race)
  • 3...2...1... countdown for hunters
  • Screens light up again, and the race is ON!

In this mode, however, it's not FIRST to pounce the survivors, but the points will be given to the 4 hunters who reached and pounced the survivors by touching the ground the fewest number of times along the way.  Better brush up on your wall jumping and air control.  Also, if you don't know how to move laterally along a single wall, here's one of many good videos out there showing you how to do so:

I'll keep track of how many times each hunter touches the ground.  After all hunters have pounced a survivor, or after 60 seconds goes by (whichever happens first), the 4 hunters that made it with the fewest pounces win.

Also, when you hit the ground, a timer will start.  If you aren't airborn within 5 or 10 seconds, YOU DIE (LAVA!)

 

The point amounts are the same as Pounce Race:

1st place: 200 points + your pounce damage

2nd place: 100 points + your pounce damage

3rd place: 50 points + your pounce damage

4th place: 50 points + your pounce damage

 

Also, if you manage to get a 25er, you get an extra 200 points.

Ok, so a good friend of ours who goes by Zoey in the game (original, right?) messaged me and said that spawning wasn't working correctly during pounce race.  The conversation went something like this:

Whoever made that server is a genius.  Seriously.  It's added to the L4D HUNTER GAMES steam group, so already shows up in everyone's list.  I'm running #1, #2, and #3, so these guys make a server with the EXACT SAME NAME, only changed the number to 4.

PS Watch out for Zoey in the HG servers.  She's pretty damn good...if you watch the HG intro video on youtube, she actually pulls a straight DEATH FROM ABOVE on me during reverse tag.  Bitch slaps me straight off the crooked telephone pole in NM1.  "What did the 5 fingers say to the face?  SLAP!".

Oh, and change your name already!  I spent an hour trying to figure out how and why an NPC bot was getting switched to the infected team before I realized that the hunter named ZOEY was HER, and NOT an NPC.  Jerk!
